Social Drinking/Use of Alcohol

1. As a military officer (now retired), I have had abundant opportunities and numerous occasions in which to drink alcohol. Even flight debriefings of some sort would be held in the officer's mess (the bar), so we could meet to 'wind down' after grueling missions - i.e. so we could meet to drink frequently and habitually.  Besides the perceived need for this continual and ubiquitous presence of alcohol at routine functions, however, there was even a stated 'need' on the most formal of occasions to appear to be drinking (with a glass of ANY liquid in hand) in the presence of various dignitaries we hosted at mess dinners - Governors General, Lieutenant Governors, politicians, celebrities, and the like.

2. The ability to drink alcohol (and, the practice of drinking it 'responsibly' - albeit in no measurably less quantity) was an unwritten expectation of the job, it was an imperceptibly integral part of a pilot's resume, and it was automatically accompanied by the halo of team 'spirit' and 'unity' necessary for attaining choice postings and career advancement.

3. Drinking was more than just 'socially acceptable'. It was a practice that was prevalent, at times pushed, and even imposed upon others by those who indulged in it themselves.

4. But, for the grace of God, to this day, I have never had a drink of alcohol (unless someone insists on counting spoons of cough syrup).

5. And despite the cost of undue penalties, I really enjoyed my career.

6. So, why is it that those who drink are perceived as being "normal", and who are accepted as being such, when it is actually we who don't drink who truly are?

7. Probably the most frequent and immediate reaction I received in response to politely declining a drink from others was the statement, "Well, Jesus turned water into wine!", or "Jesus drank!"  In these situations, it made no difference whether the speaker professed to be a Christian or was known to be a hedonist, everyone simply KNEW these statements to be 'true', and were therefore insulted that I would presume to be more pious than Jesus.

8. Of course, I have never presumed to be any such thing.  But, it does little good to debate that and less good to remain silent.  So, let's examine the merits of these statements and expose the extent of the ignorance behind them.

DID JESUS TURN WATER INTO WINE?

9. Yes. The bible says so (in John 2:1-11; 4:46). But the question that really needs to be asked is whether Jesus made alcoholic wine, or new wine?

10. Let's consider the meaning of a certain word.  Whether I speak it, or write it - if I ask you what the word "right" means and what single word might be its antonym, you would not be able to definitively tell me without having a context for it first.  Among other possibilities, the antonym for the word "right" could be "left", or it could be "wrong", and the context would determine the meaning in each case.  Similarly, the word "read" can be either a present tense verb or a past tense verb, and it would be enunciated very differently in each case, depending on its context.

11. All 233 verses in the bible that have the word "wine" in them are listed below.  From the context of each passage, it is evident whether the word "wine" is an alcoholic beverage that leads to drunkenness, or whether it is the sweet "new" wine, the fruit of the vine that is called "good" (John 2:10).

12. The bible says that the "new wine" is found in the cluster (Is 65:8), which obviously is a reference to the cluster of grapes.  The first juices pressed from the grape clusters are the very sweetest and most full of flavour.  This wine is fresh juice; not fermented, alcoholic wine.

13. The process of fermentation is one of decay.  The bible says in many places - including in a prophecy by King David - that the body of Jesus was never corrupted. "[David] seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption." (Acts 2:31; Ps 16:10) The body of Jesus is represented by bread, and the blood of Jesus is represented by the cup, the fruit of the vine.  Therefore, it makes no sense that fermented wine (i.e. alcohol) would be used as a symbol of this uncorrupted, precious, redemptive blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.  It is by this blood that we receive salvation and eternal life; not fermentation, decay and death.

14. Today wine is typically stored in glass bottles, but in biblical times they were stored in animal skin bottles. (Josh 9:4). Old bottles would have been cracked and weak-walled.  New wine in the old bottles would have fermented and burst the bottles.  That is why Jesus said, "Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved." (Matt 9:17)  BOTH are preserved because the new bottles prevented spontaneous fermentation.

DID JESUS DRINK FERMENTED/ALCOHOLIC WINE?

15. The Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves and accused Jesus of drinking wine (just like people do today in an attempt to justify their drinking of alcohol).  "For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.  The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!" (Luke 7:33-34)

a. Did John have a devil?  Certainly not. The Pharisees were liars.

b. Was Jesus a glutton?  Certainly not. The Pharisees were liars.

c. Was Jesus a winebibber? Certainly not. The Pharisees were liars.

d. Was Jesus a friend of publicans and sinners?  Certainly not.  The Pharisees were liars.

NOTE: (Jesus is only a friend of publicans and sinners in the sense that he calls them to repentance so that they can have everlasting life; he is not a friend in the sense of endorsing and/or of engaging in their sins with them, as the Pharisees and mockers suggest.)

e. As an aside, there is a devilish Pentecostal song that propagates this false doctrine in lyrics that boast of "Jesus, Friend of Sinners; Jesus Friend of mine", as if Christians are at liberty to continue sinning and to expect the Lord to love us and to accept us, notwithstanding our unrepentant attitudes and continuing sin.  This thinking is akin to Calvinistic heresy: Perseverance of the Saints and Once-Saved-Always-Saved doctrine; and it is wrong. God commandeth all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30) "For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins." (Heb 10:26)

WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURE?

16. There are many more reasons that we can examine to prove that alcoholic beverages are forbidden to Christians, the body of Christ, his church, the temple of the Holy Ghost.  I will only list a few of them, as follows:

a. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost. "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?" (I Cor 6:19)

b. "If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." (I Cor 3:17)

c. Nazarites were forbidden to drink wine: "And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD: He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried." (Numbers 6:1-3)

d. God punished the children of Israel because they ignored this commandment by giving Nazarites wine to drink.  "And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites.  Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD. But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not." (Amos 2:11-12)

e. Samson was a Nazarite from his mother's womb and was greatly used by God. (Judges 13:5,7; 16:17)

f. Even Samson's mother was forbidden from drinking wine or strong drink. (Judges 13:4, 7, 14)

g. John the Baptist had the Spirit of God upon him and was forbidden from drinking wine: "For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb." (Luke 1:15)

h. Is the Lord Jesus Christ wise?  Certainly.  Then how can one conclude that Jesus made and/or drank alcoholic wine, when Prov 20:1 says, "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise."?

i. It is inconsistent with the character of Jesus to have consumed a substance that is fermented/decayed/corrupted.

j. It is inconsistent with the character of Jesus to have made alcoholic wine at the wedding feast: "Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!" (Hab 2:15)

k. The priests were forbidden from drinking wine in the performance of their duties.  "Neither shall any priest drink wine, when they enter into the inner court." (Ezek 44:21) Is the Lord Jesus Christ a priest?  Certainly. There are many verses that call him our high priest: "And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec." (Heb 5:9-10) As our high priest, Jesus is making intercession for us: "Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." (Heb 7:25)

l. Is the Lord Jesus Christ a King?  Certainly. There are many verses that call him a King: "And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." (Rev 19:16)  Is he a prince?  Certainly.  He is the prince of peace (Is 9:6), and he is the Prince of princes (Dan 8:25) But Kings are not to drink wine and princes are not to drink strong drink. "It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink" (Prov 31:4)

17. So, would Jesus have violated these scriptures by drinking wine or strong drink, as a King and a Prince?  Certainly NOT.

18. Jesus washed us from our sins with his own blood, and he made us kings and priests.  "Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father" (Rev 1:5b-6a)

19. So, as kings and priests, are we at liberty to drink wine or strong drink in violation of scripture? (Prov 31:4) Certainly NOT.

20. No Christian can read the verses below and conclude that the bible endorses the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

The "Berean Research Institute" is a scripture-based, family-oriented area of cyber-space wherein men, women and children can research beliefs and doctrines that impact their assembly, ministry and/or personal lives.

We encourage all to fear God and to keep his commandments by searching the scriptures daily and by being doers of the word.

Many people today claim to be Christians, disciples of Jesus, but fail to continue in his word as commanded in John 8:31, and therefore are deceiving even themselves.  (James1:22)  The result of such deception will be exclusion from the Kingdom of God (Matt 7:21-23 and Matt 25:8-12).

Not everyone ... shall enter the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (Matt 7:21)

If you consider yourself to be a Pentecostal, Baptist, Catholic, JW, Adventist - even a life-long one - and are convinced that you are on your way to heaven, we encourage you to consider some of the biblical doctrines that we examine in these articles and videos - and be SURE that you are on your way to heaven.

That is our ultimate goal for you - that every one of you obtains eternal life!!
