II Sam 24:9; I Chron 21:5-6: David Numbers How Many Men of War in Israel?
When David numbered the military strength of Judah and Israel, he found:
1,300,000 (2 Sam 24:9), or
1,570,000 (1 Chron 21:5-6)?
1. Regarding the issue of how many men King David found who were fit for military service, careful reading easily solves what only appears to be a contradiction:
2. II Sam 24:9 says that in Israel there were "eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men."(i.e. 1,300,000)
3. I Chr 21:5-6 says, "all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword." (i.e. 1,570,000)
4. Of the total 1,570,000 men who "drew sword" (i.e. were fit for military service), there were obviously 1,300,000 whom Joab reported to be "valiant men". (i.e. these were 1,300,000 battle-hardened soldiers. Therefore, there were 270,000 men whom Joab reported as being simply unproven as yet in battle).
5. The reason we are examining these supposed 'contradictions' is to prove our claim that the King James Bible is true and that the new versions have errors, omissions and contradictions.
6. It is obvious that the King James is precise and accurate, so far. But consider the NIV reading on this issue - the most popular modern version today:
a. II Sam 24:9 says 800,000 in Israel and 500,000 in Judah
b. I Chron 21:5-6 says 1,100,000 INCLUDING 470,000 in Judah.
7. The NIV is simply wrong. Therefore, it cannot be God's word. This is an example of what we mean by saying that the issue has nothing to do with opinions. Look at the text itself in each book, forget about everyone's opinions, and judge whether the text is true or false on its own merits.
8. As always in cases of conflict, the King James is true; the NIV is false. No opinions - just evidence and fact.
